Incorporated this year, SurgeonsLab aims to surgeries and clinical interventions safer by providing simulation systems for neurosurgical training using patient-specific physical models. With the CHF 150,000 from Venture Kick, the startup plans to scale up the production of 4D simulators and ramp up early market entry overseas.

SurgeonsLab develops and produces realistic, patient-specific models and simulations for training microsurgical procedures and endovascular interventions and validating new medical devices. By using medical image data of real patients, the startup creates 3D simulations models of a patient’s head anatomy with all required micro-anatomies, including functional and physiological properties in less than 48 hours after receiving the patient’s CT data. Neurosurgeons use these models in a 4D simulator to train microsurgery and achieve accurate results in the operating rooms.

Compared to existing training manikins and animal models, SurgeonsLab provides the only solution that achieves the accuracy and detail required to train microsurgery and catheter-based micro-interventions. In 2019, neurosurgeons at Inselspital Bern tested the startup’s minimal viable prototype and validated the feasibility of using the simulator for clinical applications.

SurgeonsLab is planning for a product launch event in July 2021 at SITEM Insel, Bern, which will include training for specialists and expert neurosurgeons from medical centers in Europe. The startup has already received several pre-orders from major industry leaders and renowned surgery centers such as Inselspital Bern and Harvard Medical School in the US.

The founders – Fredrick Johnson Joseph who is pursuing a PhD at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research in Bern, and David Bervini, a neurosurgeon at Inselspital in Bern – will use the CHF 150,000 to scale up the production of 4D simulators and ramp up early market entry overseas by the end of 2021.
