Award ceremony

The Boost My Startup Challenge, a collaboration between BG Ingénieurs Conseils – a WSP company – and UBS, once again attracted the interest of innovative start-ups Five of them were selected to present their products to a jury of entrepreneurs and to investors on October 12th at UBS. This year’s winner was Emissium, a Valais-based start-up active in the field of decarbonization.

After lengthy deliberation, the jury of the 3rd edition of the Boost My Startup Challenge crowned Emissium. Cofounded by Rafael Castro-Amoedo (CEO) and Alessio Santecchia (CTO), the Swiss electrical sustainability startup brings extremely granular and accurate data on electricity emissions. Emissium covers more than 10 life cycle indicators of electricity at a 15-minute level and down to the level of the municipality. This allows a type of environmental labelling that is currently not available in the market. It also leverages a power AI engine, that allows energy consumers to know in advance when the electricity will have a low environmental impact (i.e. when the renewable energy share is the largest, being therefore greener and better for consumption). The startup’s preliminary results show savings of up to 50% in emissions by deploying Emissium forecasting system.

Contacted by Startupticker.ch, CEO Rafael Castro-Amoedo explains that Emissium provides quality data that allows companies to make good and informed decisions. The company will be commercializing it soon in the form of a public API via a web platform. Speaking of the company's offer, he adds: “We also have specific data solutions for medium to large energy consumers, in which we leverage our huge amount of data, to not only help companies benchmark and track but also implement effective decarbonization plans, contributing to an effective reduction of their carbon footprint.”

Emissium makes money by selling raw data to any user/organization that requests granular, local and precise data, on more than 10 environmental indicators (covering among others carbon emissions, renewable energy share, nuclear share, etc). The CEO explains: “Here we cover consulting companies, R&D departments, Research institutions, government and public entities. We then use our data to provide solutions (SaaS) to medium to large energy consumers. Pricing options depend on the level of features, as well as the company's annual electricity consumption. One particularity of Emissium is that we have completely free software for power providers (producers and distributors). Reach out to know more!”

Emissium is currently fundraising to expand its team and further develop its product. The team expects a rollout of its API by early 2024, and a beta version of Emissium data solution by Q3 2024. Based in Sion, the startup is looking to expand its team of four in the upcoming months!

A high-level final

This year, four other start-ups had the opportunity to present their products to the jury at UBS:

  • ExerGo, innovating in the field of sustainable heating and cooling networks;
  • Quanthome, working to democratize information and data in the construction sector;
