CREAL has obtained a Tech Growth loan of CHF 500’000 from the Foundation for Technological Innovation (FIT). Based at the EPFL Innovation Park, the start-up develops a light-field display technology for virtual and augmented reality, which brings true optical depth and a better immersion.

The solution developed by CREAL mitigates the visual fatigue resulting from current virtual reality technologies, which use two flat screens to create an illusion of depth and therefore disregard the natural need of our eyes to focus on the right distance.
The Lausanne-based start-up developed a technology for virtual and augmented reality goggles that project virtual images with true optical depth into the real environment, while reproducing the natural function of the eyes. CREAL’s goggles enable the eye to focus on several virtual objects at various distances, i.e. virtual objects are blurred depending on where the eyes are looking, just like they would naturally blur in the real word.

Created in 2017 by Tomas Sluka and other co-founders coming from the EPFL, CERN and several start-ups, CREAL now has 14 people and was very successful in 2019. The start-up was selected among the 10 finalists of the “NASA iTech 2019” in June 2019 and won the “Swisscom StartUp Challenge” in August 2019. CREAL was also nominated “Deep Tech Pioneer” by Hello Tomorrow in November 2019 and received the support of the “Horizon 2020 EIC Accelerator Pilot” phase 1 and 2.

The FIT Tech Growth loan will enable CREAL to pursue its growth and to develop its products. Following the virtual reality goggles, the start-up plans on using its technology for augmented reality goggles in 2020 and on conceiving smart glasses in 2021.
