Fortune Magazine identified 7 cities with the potential to become the next Silicon Valley. One of the cities is Zurich.

In times of slow growing economies investors are looking for alternatives to blue chips or government bonds. Start-ups with revolutionary products promise to generate an attractive return. And of course: not all of these start-ups are in Silicon Valley. That’s the reason why the Fortune Magazine has looked for the next Silicon Valley.

Now the Magazine published the results. On its Website it presents 7 selected cities. The selection is based on the Global Innovation Index published by Insead and the UN's World Intellectual Property Organization which means that the chances for Switzerland were good. Switzerland this year retained the first place position in the Innovation Index.

In addition the team of Fortune Magazine looked closely at the cities and communities within the top countries and identified the cities with “the mix of talent, curiosity, and risk taking that leads to game-changing new products and services.”

One of the 7 cities is Zurich. In the eyes of Fortune Magazine the local talent is the most important advantage of the city. The authors mention also Google’s engineering headquarter but also two start-ups: Doodle and Wuala. Zurich is recommended for Hardware and Cleantech start-ups.

Most of the other six selected cities are also in Europe: Fortune selected Stockholm, Dublin, Copenhagen, Oulu and Eindhoven. The seventh city with the potential to be the next Silicon Valley is Singapore.
