The latest Withings consumer hybrid wristwatch, the ScanWatch 2 features a new sensor that allows users to track core body temperature continuously 24/7. This technology comes from ETH Zurich spinoff greenteg, provider of sensors for wearables and medtech applications.

Based in Zurich with 50 employees, greenteg develops and manufactures certified sensors that are integrated into smart wearables across various industries worldwide. With CALERA, greenteg offers a wearable sensor that monitors core body temperature continuously and non-invasively via a miniaturized heat flux sensor, combined with a powerful algorithm and a patented thermal integration design. This technology results from over a decade of research conducted in collaboration with leading sports and medical research institutes and partners in Switzerland and the European Union. Further collaborative projects in the wearables are ongoing with customers in Europe, Asia and the United States. The company also has established a global presence in the photonics segment, thanks to its collaboration with Thorlabs.

The startup has already established itself in the sports market with its sports performance monitor, the CORE sensor. “In less than a year, CORE has been adopted by endurance sports athletes to improve training performance when competing in very hot environments. For instance, during the Summer 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, several gold medals were won, thanks to CORE. “This proves the functionality and reliability of CALERA technology despite harsh environments where athletes were exposed to strong wind and sweltering heat”, explains the company.

Entering a USD 61.7bn market with Withings
Building on this success, the startup has tapped into a new market: The startup is now integrating the CALERA core body temperature monitoring sensors in consumer wearables to provide unprecedented insights into day and night body temperature fluctuations. According to Statista Market Insights, the smartwatches segment is projected to reach US$44.91bn in 2023, with an annual growth rate of 8.26%, resulting in a market volume of USD 61.7bn by 2027.

After Corsano Health which launched the second generation of the CardioWatch 287 in November 2022, Withings has also chosen CALERA for its newly launched smartwatch ScanWatch2. A pioneer in connected Health, Withings provides clinically validated and multi-award-winning products, including smart scales, hybrid watches, blood pressure monitors and sleep analysers, used by millions worldwide. ScanWatch 2 smartwatch provides a single lead medically cleared ECG function with atrial fibrillation detection with the ability to continuously monitor health biomarkers such as body temperature, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and female menstrual cycles.

The partnership with Withings represents a significant stride towards personalized health management, combining greentegs's expertise in sensor technology with Withings pioneering in digital health. “For the Direct-to-consumer market (Wearables) this collaboration with Withings is an important milestone for our company. This is for us the first Smart Watch being launched on this scale”, said Lukas Durrer, greenteg 's Co-Founder.

Thanks to the growing market demand and profitability, greenteg has managed to sustain itself financially. Strategic private capital investments enabled it to target the wearable market and finance the increasing production capacity.
