H-125 Helicopter

Through its virtual reality simulator, VRM-Switzerland (VRMotion AG) has set new standards for professional helicopter simulators on the market. The startup has integrated unique features into its simulators, allowing aspiring pilots to control helicopter elements like in a real cockpit. The use of this technology in training is already in full swing.

There are a large number of accidents occurring in small light aircraft, and one of the reasons for this is the lack of external training to prepare pilots for all possible scenarios in the real situation. To address the problem VRM-Switzerland, founded in 2016, developed new solutions to facilitate evidence-based training, competency-based training, and scenario-based training, which are important pillars in modern flight operations, coupled with human factor aspects.

VRM-Switzerland designs and develops simulators that give the prospective pilot the impression of sitting in a real helicopter while training. Through the VR goggles, the student can see all instruments and control elements as in a real cockpit. The electrically controlled motion platform tilts according to the control input and realistically reproduces gusts and turbulence. A significantly improved visual representation of the terrain also contributes to a ‘real flying experience’. The simulator also features full-motion capabilities, which allow for maximum realism. The solution is not only environmentally friendly but could also help reduce costs and make a substantial contribution to flight safety.

Fabian Riesen, the founder of VRM-Switzerland, expressed the uniqueness of the company’s simulators. He says, “VRM-Switzerland’s simulators are equipped with capabilities that were previously impossible to realize. For instance, while the pilot is using the simulator, he can see the position of his legs and hands while controlling the elements in the cockpit. This detail plays a significant role and helps to enhance the flying experience. The second core aspect is the ability to track and monitor the pilot’s movements during a training session to provide quick feedback on performance. At the end of the simulation training, the students are able to operate a real helicopter with ease.”

A growing number of customers and team
At the beginning of the year Mountainflyers, the Bern based helicopter flying school, became the first customer to incorporate the VR simulator into its training programs to enable its students to learn all relevant procedures and manoeuvres on the R22 and H125 Flight Training Solutions. Thanks to VRM-Switzerland’s technology, students can practice special flight manoeuvers and dangerous situations on the ground without any risk, giving them the necessary routine to increase safety while in air. Mountainflyers is finding further use cases and business models with the technology.

Besides Mountainflyers, VRM-Switzerland has attracted several other customers; some of them are using the full package technology solution from VRM-Switzerland and others contracted the company to design and customize a simulator for them.

Future developments
The company is working with its partners (especially HSR University and others) to further improve its technology to increase pilot safety and minimize accidents. In line with this, VRM-Switzerland is collaborating with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to develop new standards for VR-based simulators and other training devices.
