Smallpdf, an online PDF software, has reached over 500 million users across 200 countries. Other areas within the company have also significantly grown.
Founded in 2013, Smallpdf was established with the goal to streamline digital document paperwork for business teams and individuals. The company offers a set of 18 easy-to-use online tools that enable users to modify or enhance PDF documents, including functions to compress, fill forms, and to create PDF files. As workplaces make the shift to operating digitally and collaborating online, the Swiss startup has also paced itself ahead of its competitors that offer traditional, offline enterprise-grade PDF software such as Adobe, Nitro, and Foxit, in terms of search traffic. The freemium SaaS platform has significant followings in the US, Brazil, and India.
Since 2014, the company has seen exponential growth. The number of users of its solutions has grown to half a billion. The online platform acquired 8 million users in 2014, 100 million in 2017, 143 million in 2018, and this year alone, the company has acquired 163 million - - totalling to just over half a billion user.
Top 300 most visited websites
Smallpdf sits within the top 300 most visited sites on Alexa, outranking popular news outlets such as Bloomberg, DailyMail, and AOL. Today, the company has 30 employees at its headquarter in Zurich, Switzerland, and a second office in Belgrade, Serbia.
"We're thrilled with our progress in the last few years," says Dennis Just, CEO. "To accommodate the growing needs of our user base, we also plan to expand our team and enhance our current toolset, as well as bringing in new functionalities, including an electronic signing tool, the offline desktop app, and a mobile version of Smallpdf, in the coming year."
This is not the first time that the platform has branched out. Just a year prior, Smallpdf was announced to be a part of the first round of Dropbox's 'extensions,' enabling users of the file storage space to PDF editing capabilities, where it has since become the most popular third-party integration.
