QualySense, a pioneer in high-speed analytics and sorting solutions for seeds, grains, and beans, has entered a partnership with six world’s leading coffee companies including Nespresso and Starbucks. The companies have invested $ 1 million to automatize the coffee quality inspection and roasting performance with the QSorter technology. The first products are ready for delivery.

Today, the routine inspection of a green coffee sample is limited to visual quality parameters. Beans’ size and defects grading are still performed manually, and it can take up to 20 minutes per sample. Some aspects of the manual grading process such as eye fatigue and insufficient grading experience are sometimes unavoidable during harvest time. This may directly affect processing/blending/roasting decisions. Furthermore, invisible quality parameters that drive the roasting process, such as the amount of sucrose or lipids, are not at all measured during the inspection and the reason has been the unavailability of rapid non-destructive methods.

The global coffee industry leaders, Cooxupé, Dubai Multi Commodity Center, Nespresso, Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, Starbucks, and Suntory, have joined forces with QualySense to solve these challenges by means of the QSorter technology from QualySense. The QSorter is the only high-speed single bean analyser in the world combining 3D Imagining, High-Resolution Spectroscopy with Machine Learning Algorithms, Precision Sorting and several data handling features in just one platform. Every second, up to 30 green coffee beans are analysed with respect to visual and invisible quality properties. Each bean is analysed, and a lot of data are generated to help users make the right decisions at any time.

The QSorter has the potential of solving several of today’s challenges and it will become a new standard for the entire coffee industry. The first units of the QSorter® for the inspection of green coffee beans are produced in collaboration with Ferrum AG and will be installed in Summer 2022.

Marco Bellinato, a coffee expert: “QualySense will revolutionise and globally standardise the way we inspect coffee, will bring to the market the must-have tool for traders or roasters. This machine will help me improve efficiency and speed of service; we will be able to inspect hundreds of samples in a fraction of time compared to today's standards.”

Francesco Dell’Endice, founder and CEO of QualySense: “We are very honoured and thankful to work with such world-leading coffee companies in advancing quality control and digital solutions for the coffee industry. The enthusiasm is very high, and all the partners are contributing enormously with their know-now and longstanding expertise. The 1st campaign of field tests ended successfully, and we are now starting deliveries”.
