Sophia Genetics, the European leader in Data Driven Medicine, yesterday officially moved into its new, expanded premises in Saint-Sulpice, marking the occasion with a discussion on the merits of using data to improve patient outcomes. The expansion is a significant milestone for the company which was founded in 2011 at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) Innovation Park, and now provides services to over 40 European healthcare institutions across 10 countries.

The growth story of Sophia Genetics is set to continue in 2015, with over 100 client institutions, leading European laboratories and hospitals, likely to be in place by the end of the year. Sophia Genetics currently employs 40 experts in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics, a figure expected to grow significantly.

Through its advanced algorithms, Sophia Genetics improves the diagnosis and treatment of disease thanks to accurate, fast and cost effective analysis of genomic data. Already, thousands of patients a month, with conditions including cancer and heart disease, are benefitting from the use of the technology across Europe.

Speaking at the official opening, CEO and Co-Founder Jurgi-Camblong said:

“This expansion marks a significant milestone not just for our company but also for patient access to the latest scientific breakthroughs. It is only through advanced analysis of genomic data that sense can be made of the huge amounts of information generated by DNA sequencing.

The results that we provide have a direct benefit for thousands of people– providing doctors with invaluable insights into how to treat, and prevent chronic conditions. We look forward to enabling an even greater number of patients in Europe to benefit in 2015 and beyond”

Also speaking at the event, Philippe Leuba, Head of the Department of Economic Affairs and Sport, Vaud Cantonal Government, said:

“Sophia Genetics’ success shows that with great technology and a smart team ready to take on the challenge of starting a company, a start-up from the Canton of Vaud can develop and grow significantly. This remarkable achievement reflects the positive environment for start-ups in the Canton of Vaud and in Switzerland more broadly. I salute the impressive development of Sophia Genetics in just three years. This type of success adds to the diverse economic fabric of the Canton of Vaud, which is among the most diversified in Switzerland.”

Also marking the opening, Adrienne Corboud Fumagalli, Vice President for Innovation and Technology Transfer at EPFL added:

“Sophia Genetics is a Swiss success story, and at EPFL we are proud of its evolution from start-up launched in our Innovation Park, to established European market leader in genomic analysis.

We wish the company well in its new headquarters, as it seeks to bring its technology and solutions to a greater number of healthcare institutions in 2015.”
