The cube

Medical Templates, a specialist in interventional radiology, has completed a CHF3 million seed investment round to fuel the commercialisation of its patented Cube Navigation System. The CE-mark certified simplifies CT guided interventions.

Currently, most interventions are performed free-hand, leading to inaccurate, repeated and unnecessarily long procedures. Medical Templates aims to update the standard of care through easy-to-use computer-guided precision. The company develops and sells the Cube Navigation System (CNS), a faster-than-free-hand navigation system for image-guided interventions with thin instruments, such as biopsies, ablations, drainages, pain therapy, and more.

The patented system consists of single-use, sterile instrument guides made intelligent by Medical Templates’ proprietary algorithms, which work across imaging modalities such as CT or Cone-Beam and PET-CT & MRI. First data has proven that the CNS system significantly increased the accuracy of interventions while reducing procedure time by almost 50%, making it a cost-effective solution for hospitals.

A family office based in Pfäffikon, Switzerland, with longstanding expertise in the Health and Biotechnology industry, has invested CHF 3 million in Medical Templates’s seed round, supporting its commercialising plans. The company is launching two products covering thin instrument interventions: the Puncture Cube for pain therapy interventions and Access Cube for larger needle interventions, including ablations and biopsies. Thanks to the CE approval for its navigation solution, the startup will open commercial operations in European markets, followed by expansion into the US market upon FDA certification.

“We were impressed with the way Medical Templates transformed something as simple as a cube into a smart and easy-to-use navigation solution. We are convinced that the technology, paired with the team, can make it a success and ultimately change the current standard of care” - Oliver Eckelmann, CEO discoveric ag.

New CEO to facilitate commercial growth
In conjunction with the seed financing round, Medical Templates announced the appointment of Anika Uhde to the position of CEO. Anika has over 17 years of experience in the medical devices industry and a strong commercial background. She has held Marketing, Business Development and Sales roles at Philips Healthcare and Sonova and also brings startup experience from Biovotion and Biofourmis. Her experience is valuable to drive Medical Templates into the next phase.

Current CEO and co-founder Stephan Wetzel will lead Clinical Development as Chief Medical Officer and Rafael Hostettler will focus on the CTO role.
