Swiss ophthalmology startup expands to the UK

For Winterthur-based startup betterview, the summer of 2023 was nothing short of eventful. A provider of fixed-price laser eye treatments, betterview has now opened its seventh clinic in Switzerland, this time in Chur. The newly inaugurated clinic offers laser treatments at transparent, fixed prices, adhering to the company's customer-centric approach. On top of that, betterview is gearing up for the grand opening of its flagship clinic in Zurich's city center, covering a sprawling 250m² area and housing an operating theater for lens treatments.

In addition to its local expansion, betterview has now taken its first steps beyond the Swiss market with the establishment of betterview Britain Ltd. The first clinic in London is set to welcome patients in the second quarter of 2024, and preparations are underway as the company scouts for suitable locations and recruits skilled medical professionals. Rouven Mayer, co-founder of betterview, shared insights into the decision to launch in London, stating, “We evaluated various markets and came to the conclusion that London is the right place to continue the betterview success story. The market situation is comparable to that in Switzerland, and there is no provider with the same concept yet. Accordingly, we are confident that our offer will also be well received in the UK.”

The company's vision is to offer the same array of services in London as it does in Switzerland, with long-term plans to establish a network of clinics in the UK region. Since its foundation in spring 2022, betterview has experienced a grand rise in demand for its laser eye treatments. The clinics have quickly achieved economic self-sufficiency, and within its first year of operation, the company achieved a double-digit million turnover. Offering state-of-the-art laser eye treatments at fixed prices, betterview has gained recognition for its commitment to quality and customer experience.

With investors like Ertan Wittwer, Philip Magoulas, and Marcel Kubli, betterview's rapid growth has extended to cities including Zurich, Basel, Bern, Aarau, Lucerne, St. Gallen, and Chur. Future expansion plans include locations in French-speaking Switzerland, Ticino, and London.
