A start-up from the canton of Fribourg has won a global award for its NFC technology. Skoubee’s medal for pets helps to identify lost dogs or cats and to manage medical information.

Each year, RFID Journal recognizes companies that have distinguished themselves by their successful use of radio frequency identification (RFID) or introduction of a valuable new RFID product or service. A group of more than 20 independent judges selects finalists in each of seven categories. The winners have been announced last Friday at RFID Journal LIVE! 2015, the company's 13th annual conference and exhibition, held at the San Diego Convention Center.

"The scope and complexity of the deployments in this year's submissions were beyond anything we've seen in the past, which indicates that RFID has matured to the point that some companies are using it on a large scale and in core parts of their operation," said Mark Roberti, RFID Journal's founder and editor.

Skoubee has won in the category best NFC deployment. This award is given to the end-user company that has demonstrated the best use of Near Field Communication (NFC) for consumer or other applications. The three finalists from Canada, the Philippines and Switzerland, selected by an independent panel of judges, had each 15 minutes to make a presentation.

Skoubee was created for the purpose of helping pet owners find their lost pets. The start-up has developed an interactive medal whose design incorporates the latest identification technology and can be worn on pet collars (dogs, cats) like any other medal. The Skoubee medal provides access to pet profiles which are published on the Web at www.skoubee.com.

There are three different ways a pet’s profile can be accessed: Pets that are wearing a Skoubee medal will be able to tell finders their personal information by linking you to their profile at skoubee.com by:

  • touching the Skoubee medal to a smartphone or tablet that is equipped with NFC (NFC settings on ).
  • flashing the QR code on the Skoubee medal with a smartphone or tablet.
  • entering the 8-digit PIN number at www.skoubee.com

Skoubee was founded in 2013 by three co-founders who have over 15 years of experience in the fields of electronic identification for pets, RFID, mobile and web applications, as well as relationships with veterinarians. The company is located in the region of Veveyse Fribourg.
