Searchbox joins the FP7-ICT-2011-SME-DCL project “Fusepool” in order to leverage its semantic technology to pool product/service and research information and distribute it to SMEs.

The EU-project Fusepool is a 2-year project, kick-started in July, and aims to pool highly relevant information from various sources to help SMEs access the right information at the right time in order to develop their business activities.

Some use-cases include access to funding opportunities (both public and private), partnership opportunities and IP-related information (patents, publications, etc). Leveraging the fusepool framework, it should be easy for small and medium-sized organizations to access this information. Interlinking contents from the various information sources is also an objective of the project. Other project partners include the Berner Fachhochschule, Enoll, Geox, Treparel and Xerox. The project benefits include aggregation and consolidation of contents coming from various information sources into a generic format, together with the optimization of knowledge finding based on learning from individual users through the Open Living Labs concept.

Not familiar with Living Labs? A living lab is a real-life test and experimentation environment where users and producers create innovations. Basically, its activities include the co-creation of innovative products & services, exploring its potential and uses, experimenting with the actual implementations and evaluating results. This methodology is an efficient way to proceed with iterative and agile software development (among other things). If you’d like to participate, there is actually an Open Call with up to €7K of innovation vouchers to individual professionals or SMEs.

On the technology side, Searchbox will be leveraging state-of-the-art information mining and semantic-web technologies. Content classification and entity identification are also expected to enable automated enrichment and interlinking of information from internal as well as web-harvested raw content. Some interesting Linked Open Data repositories such as Eurostat or DBPedia (Wikipedia) are also leveraged in order to pool knowledge related to the information need of the users. The core framework is built leveraging some open-source components including Liferay and Stanbol for instance.
