ProtonMail announced the start of the ProtonMail iOS and Android mobile apps beta. The innovative service is distinguished by its ease of use that allows everyone to benefit in full from encrypted emails.

ProtonMail was started a year ago by Jason Stockman, Wei Sun and Andy Yen (left to right) with a record breaking Indiegogo campaign which provided the Geneva based start-up with the funds to begin development of the mobile apps. That critical early funding allowed the team to go from a software project started in the CERN cafeteria to a fully functioning encrypted email service. To thank its early supporters, ProtonMail will first roll out the mobile app beta to its Indiegogo Lifetime, Visionary, and Mobile level contributors. The invites should all be sent out by the end of this weekend.

For the mobile app beta, ProtonMail will be using Apple Testflight and Google Play beta. Due to the limitations of Apple Testflight, the beta test is limited to 1000 beta testers. In a blogpost announced that the Android beta will be limited to a similar size in order to keep the beta efficient and as short as possible.

As the beta is not yet fully subscribed, ProtonMail will open the remaining slots to people who missed our crowdfunding campaign. That means starting today, the company will make the Mobile perk from our crowdfunding campaign available again.

If you like to get early access to the ProtonMail iOS and Android mobile apps, you can make a $29 donation through the ProtonMail donation page here: https://protonmail.ch/donate

This will support the efforts of the start-up to continue to develop ProtonMail as free and open source software while also being fair to the contributors who donated last year. After donating, it is possible to register for the iOS and Android beta here:

Android: https://blog.protonmail.ch/android-form/

The next batch of invites will be send out on August 27th. Space is limited to 1000 users for both iOS and Android so when all beta slots are taken, ProtonMail will make another announcement.

The mobile apps will be in beta for a couple months before going public in the app stores.
