Pully based Triplequote has been acquired by Gradle in a private transaction. The San Francisco company is extending its developer productivity solution portfolio directly to the Scala developer community by speeding up builds with the world’s only parallel compiler for the Scala language, Hydra. Martin Odersky, creator of the Scala programming language and advisory board member to Triplequote, will continue in a technical advisory role at Gradle. Both Cofounders of the startup have joined Gradle family.

Triplequote's story started late in 2016 with the mission to speed up Scala compilation times by tapping into the multi-core pool. The bootstrapped startup based in Pully recently shared its excitement about the acquisition in a blog post.

“Triplequote is thrilled to join forces with a company that shares our passion for engineered solutions to developer productivity challenges,” said Iulian Dragoș, co-founder at Triplequote. “Our common roots in open source makes this a great cultural fit as well,” added Triplequote’s other founder, Mirco Dotta.

Both founders will continue to improve and expand acceleration technologies for Scala teams with Gradle. Hydra will be part of the story, but the vision is much larger. Iulian Dragoș explains: “We are joining forces with Gradle to address the whole development lifecycle. This includes employing a variety of technologies (such as build caching and predictive test selection) to further speed up build and test times, and making Scala and sbt first-class citizens within the Gradle Enterprise solution suite.” Martin Odersky, creator of the Scala language and Triplequote advisor, will join Gradle in a technical advisory role.

Matching visions

Triplequote team crossed paths with Gradle several times on its journey. The first time was when it began its efforts to integrate with the Gradle build system, one of the five that it now supports. This led the team to becoming familiar with the Gradle business model and intrigued them and influenced their own development. Then the team discovered that the Gradle customer value proposition focused on improving developer productivity aligned very well with the startup’s message. When Gradle approached the startup it immediately clicked. Speaking of the matching visions, co-founder Iulian Dragos explains in the blog: “The Gradle vision is grander than our own vision for Scala. Our acceleration technology fits well with Gradle’s offerings, and their interest in the Scala market and the sbt build system community made this a perfect match.”
