The first half of 2023 sets a new incorporation record

In the first half of 2023, 25'836 new companies were already recorded. This is a growth of 4.5% compared to the same period in 2022 and an increase of 0.4% compared to the record half year of 2021. This is shown by a new analysis of IFJ.

According to the the IFJ study "National Analysis of Swiss Company Incorporations 1. Half Year 2023", 145 new companies were registered every day in the course of the first half of 2023. Thus, approximately 26'300 companies can be expected by June 30, 2023. The level is significantly higher (+14.1%) than the average of the last 10 first half years.

The most companies are founded in Craftmanship, Consulting, Real Estate and Retail Trade sectors. These four sectors account for around 44% of all new companies. Among the important sectors, B2B & B2C Services (+27.1%), Retail Trade (+13.6&) and Consulting (+11.7%) saw the highest growth. However, there were also important sectors in which the number of new entries in the commercial register fell significantly. These include IT & ICT (-12.4%), and Finance & Insurance (-7.2%).

Legal forms in comparison

In Switzerland, the limited liability company (GmbH) is by far the most popular legal form when it comes to establishing a new company. A total of 10,079 (+2.3%) new LLC (GmbH) were registered in the first half of 2023. A decrease of -5.4% can be observed for Ltd. (AG) corporations.

All regions report growth

In the first half of 2023, Northwestern Switzerland (+9.0%), Espace Midlands (+6.9%), Eastern Switzerland (+6.9%) and Ticino (+6.8%) are the major regions with the strongest growth. Zurich also recorded significant growth of +4.7% compared with the same period of the previous year. Only slight growth was recorded in Central Switzerland (+0.9%) and Southwestern Switzerland (+0.8%).
