SUNBIOTEC develops a technology for the conversion of biomass waste to clean fuels. The Zurich start-up is one of the three finalists of the myclimate innovation award.

On the occasion of its tenth birthday myclimate¸ one of the world's leading providers of voluntary carbon offsetting measures, gives an award to an innovative product that actively contributes to climate protection. Out of the numerous applications, myclimate has nominated three projects. The winner, for whom myclimate will calculate the carbon footprint free of charge, will be announced at the anniversary celebration on September 14.

One of the nominated teams is the Swiss start-up SUNBIOTEC. The technology of SUNBIOTEC allows upgrading agricultural waste through solar energy into widely applicable, clean and energy-rich synthesis gas called syngas. With this gasification process, solar energy is converted into a storable and transportable form. Syngas can be used as a direct substitute for conventional fossil fuels, therefore avoiding greenhouse gas emissions of the latter. The replacement of 10 billion litres kerosene by syngas leads to a reduction of 24 million tons of CO2. Thus, it offers a significant impact on the energy supply in the mobility sector – especially aviation.

SUNBIOTEC was founded in January 2012. The spin-off company of ETH Zurich offers business opportunities in countries where solar and/or waste biomass resources are abundant, e.g. Brazil, India, or China.
