In Switzerland, new technology is increasingly being commercialised by start-ups – and these start-ups are now also very good at attracting investors.

Dear reader

Leman Biotech is still at the beginning of the start-up journey; although the EPFL spin-off has two research labs of its own, it does not yet have a website. However, further development of the company should proceed quickly, since it has generated USD 11 million in a first financing round.

It was the largest, but by no means the only financing round for a very young company this week. Snipd received CHF 700,000 and can now further develop its podcast player, which allows users to receive short personal recommendations and capture noteworthy podcast content. Twenty Pay also raised CHF 700,000 and now intends to launch its payment solution for restaurant guests.

Other young companies will use the funds from their seed round to expand internationally, including proptech Lookmove, Rebels 0.0%, with its non-alcoholic spirits, and collectID – the provider of product authentication technology to combat counterfeiting has raised CHF 3.2 million.

The long list is no accident. Although Switzerland still shows potential in later stage rounds in an international comparison, the number of seed rounds is very high. Contrary to the traditional cliché, many start-ups in Switzerland today are emerging from new technologies that also attract investors.

This is due not least to the numerous funding offers that support the commercialisation of new technology. This week, for example, Testmate Health and Atinary Technologies both received funding from the Biopôle Start-up Fund. Ceidos received a CHF 100,000 loan from the Foundation for Technological Innovation (FIT), and GliaPharm was awarded the Innosuisse Certificate after completing the Innosuisse coaching.

Speaking of Innosuisse: The Federal Council has decided to put a new legislative provision into force to support SMEs and start-ups that currently do not have access to the European Innovation Council's Accelerator funding instrument. Innosuisse will publish the call for projects for the highly competitive «Swiss Accelerator» on 1 April 2022.

BlueLion’s LikeMinded acceleration programme supports professionals in establishing a start-up; applications for the next edition are open until 13 March. The deadline for Venture Leaders Medtech is also 13 March and for the START Summiteer 16 March. Applications are open for the Swiss Fintech Awards until 18 March; incidentally, the prize money has been significantly increased.

I would also like to mention Venturelab and Impact Hub Geneva’s events to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March. And finally, Venture Leaders Technology will present at a Startup Champions event on 9 March.

Have a sunny weekend.
