Drug development is getting more and more expensive. Cell-based assays with more predictive power can improve the success rate and reduce the cost. But the 2D assays nowadays in use are too dissimilar to human tissue to allow meaningful tests. To improve the predictive power of cell-based assays the QGel team has developed a hydrogel that allows growing 3D tissue. QGel is already selling its gel to scientific laboratories and to its first pharmaceutical accounts.
The company is planning another financing round in 2012. The money will be used among other things for the setup of a manufacturing facility.
