The number of spin-offs at the University of Basel has steadily increased in recent years - with the life sciences sector standing out. 25 life sciences spin-offs have been founded in the last four years alone. The University has thus established itself as one of the most important Swiss spin-off centres in the life sciences sector. We present the spin-offs of 2023 - including eight life sciences companies.

Around 50 spin-offs have been founded at the University of Basel in the last four years. A clear upward trend can be observed: While there were nine spin-offs in 2020, a total of 14 companies with roots at the university were founded last year. The long-term comparison is even more impressive: In the four years from 2015 to 2018, only twelve spin-offs were created, fewer than in 2023 in a single year.

Life sciences spin-offs take up a particularly large share. They account for around half of the companies. In recent years, between five and eight start-ups have been founded in the fields of biotech, medtech and digital health. Compared to other Swiss universities, alumni of the University of Basel are among the most active founders in this area.

The following spin-offs were founded in the life sciences sector in 2023:

Dentexion develops a 3D Imaging Software to diagnose peridontal disease more reliably and quicker.

Inodexa specializes in innovative digital solutions to support medical professionals and practice owners.

In addition, a promising IT spin-off, Polypheny, was founded. Polypheny focusses on delivering innovative solutions for data management and analytics, with a focus on Data Science, Data Engineering, and IT Operations. The company’s main product is the Polypheny DBMS, which is a novel kind of database management system.

According to the “Start-up policy” of the University of Basel “University start-ups are innovative companies (co-)founded by members of the University of Basel. The goal of a start-up is always to implement technology or knowledge developed at the university, for which a license agreement may be concluded. A start-up is usually a company, or more rarely an association or non-profit organization.“
