Just a few hours after Sensimed a second Medtech start-up from Lausanne announces the closing of a financing round. KB Medical SA is commercializing a robotic system for more precise and efficient surgery. The initial focus is on high precision spine surgery.

KB Medical SA, a company developing new innovative solutions for robotic assisted surgeries, announces that it has raised CHF 4.0 million from private investors in a Series A Financing.

“This funding was the starting shot for the incorporation of KB Medical SA and is a clear endorsement of the innovative developments and demonstrated success of former researchers from EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology based in Lausanne). We will now be able to accelerate our industrialization plans and introduce robotic surgery that both improves clinical outcomes and reduces the cost of health care”, said Philippe Bérard, KB Medical’s CEO.

The financial resources will be used to advance KB Medical’s leading-edge medical robotic development through clinical pathway, regulatory approvals and industrialization. Following the highly successful cadaver experiments on upper spinal surgery, several additional applications have been identified, that will benefit from the accuracy and ease of use of the robotic system.

The investors and innovators have additionally appointed Malgosia Iwankowska and Jan A. Dekker as members of the Board of Directors. “The appointment of Jan Dekker as Chairman of the Board and Malgosia Iwankowska to an executive position and Board member is an excellent opportunity for KB Medical to benefit from strong expertise, both in medical robotics and entrepreneurship” said Szymon Kostrzewski, CTO of KB Medical SA.

KB Medical offers a complete robotic assistance system, providing innovative and highly precise surgical solutions for spinal fusion surgeries. Its seamless integration into existing operating rooms is guaranteed as the robotic system is very compact and fits perfectly into surgical workflows.

Spinal fusion is a surgical technique used to join two or more vertebrae and is a well-established procedure. The use of a robotic system shall reduce surgery time and cause fewer traumas which may lead to shorter hospitalization times and reduced treatment costs. Furthermore radiation exposure of the medical staff is expected to be lowered by 30% compared to current techniques.

KB Medical´s robotic device is based on several years of research at the prestigious Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), led by Co-Me (Computer Aided and Image Guided Medical Interventions Group) and mostly funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The company is based in Lausanne and was officially founded in 2012.
