The Basel based Nutrix has outcompeted 900 startups in the Pitch competition at the Web Summit. The early-stage medtech startup developed a high tech nanosensor to detect glucose level in the saliva – a solution that will help to prevent diabetes.

The Web summit is one of the largest annual conferences for the global technology industry. More than 70’400 visitors (46.3% female attendance), including 11’000 CEOs and founders from over 163 countries, gathered in Lisbon from 3rd – 7th November, to explore new advancements in the industry, discuss the challenges and the future of tech as well as be inspired from speeches from more than 1200 speakers.

Amidst global players were 2000 startups from all over the world including 45 from Switzerland. Besides exhibiting, the startups had the opportunity to compete in the Web Summit’s startup Pitch completion, which brings together the world’s leading early-stage startups for a live onstage battle. This year, 900 startups including Imburse, AutdioTherapy, Impresso, Nutrix & SeeHow from Switzerland took part in the PITCH competition.

The Basel based Medtech startup Nutrix won the competition. Nutrix is a high tech nanosensor that is placed on the tooth to detect glucose level in the saliva and transfers information to an external app. Additionally, the invisible, non-invasive, and patient-friendly sensor tracks food intake and provides valuable information for the patient and artificial pancreas algorithms. As presented in her Pitch to the audience Maria Hahn (photo), envisions the solution to shape the future of medicine by helping to prevent diseases such as diabetes one of the fastest-growing epidemic in human history.

The co-founders, Maria Hahn and Nikjil Singh initiated the idea during MIT Technology and Innovation Bootcamp in March of 2019 and are now working towards building the first prototype. The startup is currently incubated at the Basel Children’s Hospital and has a collaboration of the University of Helsinki, which both provide Nutrix with a platform to test its technology.
