As a child Tobias Neukomm’s dream was to become a game developer. Yesterday he was awarded the Master of Swiss Apps prize for his iPad game LiquidSketch at the “Best of Swiss Apps” award ceremony. Three start-ups won in the categories Lifestyle, Public Affairs and Travel.

For the first time the “Best of Swiss Apps” prizes were awarded yesterday at an award ceremony attended by more than 300 people. One overall winner was chosen – the “Master of Swiss Apps”. In addition ten winners were selected in different categories. Among the winners are three start-ups.

“Master of Swiss Apps 2013” is Tobias Neukomm who developed LiquidSketch. It’s an innovative liquid puzzle game for the iPad based around a fluid simulation Neukomm wrote for creating realistic liquid motion and beautiful color mixing effects. The gameplay is simple and intuitive: users can mix colors, navigate mazes and solve physics puzzles by controlling the liquid using the gyroscope, by splashing it around with their fingertips or by placing pumps and blocks to construct bridges, dams, fountains etc. while listening to a meditative aquatic soundtrack by composer James Primate. A gameplay trailer is available on Youtube.

Tobias Neukomm is a Swiss math student currently (not) working on his master thesis. As a child his dream was to become a game developer. When time for university came he gave up on it and chose to study math in part because it is applicable in game development. Neukomm also always found water fascinating and when he started studying math he wanted to create a fluid simulation. After several attempts he had something cool and decided to use it to finally realize his dream of creating a game.

The “Best of Swiss Apps” prizes were awarded in ten categories. Among the winner are three start-ups:

  • Approppo, founded in 2011 and based in Bern. The company has won the prize in the category Lifestyle for the official app of the “Grand Prix von Bern”, with around 30,000 runners the most popular public fun run in Switzerland.
  • Ubique Engineering, founded in 2010 and based in Zurich. The company has won the prize in the category Public Affairs with MeteoSwiss, the weather app of MeteoSchweiz.
  • Uepaa!, founded 2012 and based in Zurich. The company has won the prize in the category Travel for its outdoor safety app.

The complete list of all winners was published on the website of the “Best of Swiss Apps” competition.
