Founded in 2020, LEG&AIRY is a deeptech startup aiming to transform the orthopaedic braces industry. An industry that has remained mostly unchanged for over 50 years. Using 3D technology, the startup designs and develops tailor-made orthopedic devices and delivers them faster than orthopaedic suppliers who rely conventional processes. The startup has generated to date a six-figure revenue and catered tailor-made orthotics to over 30 patients.

The founding of LEG&AIRY is based on Faizan Mohammad’s own painful experience. Besides dealing with several players, he had to wait several weeks for his son’s orthopaedic device. Fitting orthopaedic devices such as braces or sockets currently takes up to ten weeks due to the manual process applied in artisan workshops. In some cases, the patient’s symptoms worsen during the waiting phase, which could result in medical injuries resulting from poor fitting. The current process also leads to massive frustration for patients (especially disabled children) who depend on orthopaedic devices to retain or regain their mobility.

Together with co-founders Timo Geiser who is a certified prothesist and orthotist (CPO) and Dr. Fabio Casari, a swiss-trained orthopedic surgeon this unique trio is developing LEG&AIRY® SFP. A proprietary fitting and manufacturing technology for orthopaedic and prosthetic devices (O&P) that enables a modern way of fitting devices to the human body combating complex neuro-orthopaedic diseases such as Cereberal Palsy, Meningitis, Multiple sclerosis (MS), Diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. In the long run, the startup aims to create an algorithm that can autonomously fit orthopaedic devices to the body of the patient. By developing a specialized AI, they can reduce manual labour and thus significantly reduce the risk of medical device-related injuries (MDRPU) and allow clinicians and therapists to spend more time focusing on patient mobility.

The LEG&AIRY technology allows for creating multiple custom-fitted devices in an instant and enhances customer satisfaction through limitless possibilities for customization. Moreover, their technology stack can be used to develop different types of products, from helmets to leg prosthetics that are fully reimbursed by insurance companies. After starting operations in 2021 post-covid lockdowns, the startup has been working with five orthopaedic clinics in Switzerland and developed, fitted, and supplied 50 units.

The startup and its team were recently awarded CHF 10,000 from NTN databooster for a deep dive into their AI-Platform to boost personalized medicine in orthopedics. The funds are used to conduct a feasibility study with ZHAW. The startup has also won a spot in multiple acceleration programs, giving it access to experts and a network of potential partners and customers.

The funds from its ongoing pre-seed financing round will also flow into business development and setting up a “Fit-Factory” and strategic pop-up treatment locations that will facilitate scaling.
