Successful start for medtech marketplace hystrix

Hystrix is a marketplace for medtech products, where healthcare service providers can procure products directly from producers – transparent and cost-efficient. Only two months after the launch of the marketplace, the startup sees a monthly double-digit growth in healthcare service providers and now offers over 25’000 products from 300 brands.

The medtech industry in Switzerland but also in Europe consists mainly of SMEs with less than 50 employees per company. At the same time, spending on medtech products is increasing. In 2018 it reached an estimated 11 billion Swiss francs in Switzerland alone. Yet, there had been no consolidated marketplace for the products until recently.

Hystrix medical marketplace aims to realize substantial efficiencies for healthcare providers and medtech suppliers alike and to accelerate the daily processes in the healthcare sector. «We are a B2B broker platform with registered users only», explains Maren Kunfermann, Chief Commercial Officer of hystrix. Once the health care service provider has defined a shopping cart, an algorithm recommends where to purchase for best conditions. Payment streams as well as the logistics process take place off-platform and are handled by the supplier.

Thus, hystrix provides health care service providers with price transparency and instant access to a wide selection of products, which makes the purchasing of medtech products more convenient and cost-efficient. Two months after the launch of the marketplace, hystrix has 25’000 products and 300 brands live. The startup is also experiencing a monthly double-digit growth of healthcare services providers using its services.

«It’s important to reach an attractive range and mass in the product or service offering to get traction with customers. We’re excited to see this fast acceleration on our platform», says Kunfermann. The startup is not only growing in terms of products and transactions the hystrix team has recently expanded from eight to eleven too.

Hystrix is also considering geographical expansion and is assessing different markets based on entry barriers and synergies with the Swiss operations, according to Kunfermann. «There are different companies active in varying geographies that are aiming to build a business in the medtech product procurement space. However, none takes the same approach as us», adds Kunfermann.
