Deeptech

Switzerland performs very well when it comes to investment in deep tech start-ups. And the number of graduates in engineering has increased significantly over the last five years. Two new reports show encouraging trends for Switzerland.

Dealroom, a leading European venture capital database, has recently published a report about Deeptech investments across Europe and Israel. According to the report, the investment focus has shifted towards fintech, Healthtech, deep tech and enterprise software. Whereas investment into B2C verticals remained unchanged since 2015. Investment into fintech, healthtech enterprise and deep tech have seen the most growth.

Regarding deep tech investments between 2012 and 2017 Switzerland is positioned very well. According to Dealroom EUR 1,5 billion flowed into Swiss companies. Switzerland ranks third behind UK (EUR 3.4 bn) and Israel (EUR 3.5 bn). One of the main reasons for the good performance is the huge financing round of Roivant in August. However, even if this investment would not be taken into account, the investment in Swiss deep tech companies is on par with investment in deep tech companies in Germany. No other small European country performs on this level.

Significantly more engineers
The number of graduates in engineering has increased significantly over the last five years. This is a result of the 2016 report "Young Engineers Switzerland" by IngCH Engineers Shape our Future. The number of master’s degrees in engineering at universities increased by 35% between 2011 and 2016 to over 2'050. The universities of applied sciences granted around 3,800 Bachelor's degrees in 2016, which was also an increase of 35% compared to 2011.

In the same period, however the growth of the number of admissions has slowed down slightly: in 2016, around 3,150 people started an engineering degree at a Swiss university. This is an increase of 12% compared to 2011. The engineering sciences at universities outperformed the average of all faculties (+ 4%). At the universities of applied sciences, admission also increased. With an increase of 13% in 2016, compared with 2011, the development corresponded approximately to the average of all faculties.
