Syhelion Cemex plant

Startups join forces with established organisations to accelerate innovation, enter new markets or win new customers. Recent partnerships saw some startups bring their solutions to new continents. Synhelion and its partner, on the other hand, are advancing their efforts toward establishing the world’s first fully solar-powered cement plant.

BigOmics Analytics is the Swiss biomedical data analysis startup that developed the Omics Playground platform to offer intuitive visualisation and interpretation tools for exploring RNA sequencing and proteomics data. The company has entered a collaboration with DNAnexus Inc., the leading provider of cloud-based genomic and biomedical data access and companion analysis software. DNAnexus has more than 40,000 registered users across 48 countries and actively manages and supports more than 80 petabytes of complex proteomic, genomic, multi-omic, and clinical datasets on behalf of a growing network of collaborators.

As part of the agreement, BigOmics’ collaborative analysis environment, Omics Playground, is now available on the DNAnexus precision health data platform, providing customers with an interactive interface for visualising gene and protein expression activity patterns to better understand large-scale proteomics and transcriptomics data. Biologists can easily and quickly explore their experimental data, while bioinformaticians can offload repetitive tasks.

Synhelion and CEMEX reach a new milestone
At the beginning of 2022, Synhelion and CEMEX announced the first-ever successful production of solar clinker in a small-scale batch process pilot. The companies are now advancing from that stage to scale the technology with the world’s solar-powered cement plant, which reaffirms the potential of this technology to reach industrial-scale implementation while contributing toward decarbonising cement production. Synhelion and Cemex will now take further steps toward building a solar-driven industrial-scale pilot cement plant.

Clinker is produced in a rotary kiln at temperatures nearing 1’500°C. Fossil fuels are typically used to heat the kiln and are responsible for approximately 40% of direct CO2 emissions. Synhelion’s breakthrough technology provides sufficient heat to produce clinker without using fossil fuels. Replacing fossil fuels entirely with solar energy is a game-changer in Cemex’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Additionally, the technology creates the conditions to separate, and therefore capture, the remaining CO2 from calcination in concentrated form without additional efforts.

DigiPharm brings healthcare solutions to UAE
Burjeel Medical City (BMC), the flagship facility of Burjeel Holdings, and Digipharm, a Swiss-UK-based healthcare solutions provider, have joined hands to design and validate a new model for patient care in the UAE. The new platform, which has the potential to revolutionise the digital healthcare ecosystem, will focus initially on the Bone Marrow Transplantation program and will later expand to other specialities at the hospital. BMC and Digipharm, with clients such as the UK National Health Service, will work closely to implement digitally enabled Value-based Healthcare (VBHC) and Value-based Procurement (VBP) provisions. The partnership between BMC and Digipharm seeks to serve patients across the UAE with access to the most innovative health technologies that ensure optimised clinical pathways, and improved patient outcomes and experiences. As per the agreement, BMC will work with the company to lay the foundations to implement Digipharm’s ‘Reimburse’ Platform and the ‘Digihealth’ (patient reported outcomes) Application to enable VBHC and VBP at the hospital.
