Optimo Medical AG has sealed a partnership with Ansys, a global 1.516 billion revenue company providing multiphysics engineering simulation software since 1970. With Ansys, Optimo Medical has won a strong partner to develop further its products; Optimeyes for patient-specific eye surgery planning and Optimeyes virtual clinical trials for industry clients.

Founded in 2015, Optimo Medical AG is specialized in biomechanical analyses and simulation of the anterior eye. Its flagship software, ‘Optimeyes’ is a CE-marked technology that creates an identical, digital copy of the patient`s cornea based on eye measurement data. With this “digital twin”, the software carries out a virtual arcuate keratotomy surgery to find the optimal and personalised incision parameters for each patient to correct astigmatism during a femtosecond laser cataract surgery. Alongside Optimeyes, the startup also offers the ‘Optimeyes Virtual Clinical Trials’ (VCT) targeting industrial clients. Clients in the ophthalmology community are already using both products.

“Before I started using Optimeyes, like all ophthalmologists, I was forced to work with one-size-fits-all statistical models, which frequently lead to overcorrections. With Optimeyes, I am now able to work on a patient-specific approach. I consider the usage of Optimeyes in surgery planning to be a real game-changer within the industry,” said Johan Blanckaert, an ophthalmologist at Oculus Clinic.

Growing with a strong partner
To further deliver solutions that empower surgical precision to maximise patient outcomes, Optimo Medical has entered a partnership with Ansys (NASDAQ: ANSS) to integrate Ansys Mechanical with its Optimeyes digital twin technology. Ansys is a billion-dollar NASDAQ listed company and a global leader in engineering simulation, serving clients across various industries, including aviation, automobile, computer, mobile, and wearables. Optimo Medical will leverage Ansys’ technology to enhance its products and introduce new ones.

As revealed to Startupticker, this partnership is a major achievement for the startup and its team of six employees as it will enable the company to explore new products, scale and gain visibility. “Winning Ansys as a partner is a knightly accolade that allows us to establish credibility with the clients,” emphasised Alexander van der Mey, Chief Commercial Officer at Optimo Medical. Later this year, the startup plans to launch additional products.

“In eye surgery, microns make the difference between a successful operation and disappointing results. Optimeyes uses Mechanical to guide eye surgery treatment planning, simulate the effects of physical interferences and enhance patient outcomes,” said Harald Studer, CEO at Optimo Medical AG. “Together with Ansys, we are paving the way towards large-scale adoption of engineering simulation within the eye care industry and swiftly treating astigmatism for millions of patients worldwide.”

“As the ophthalmology community exploits simulation to deliver personalized treatment, it is crucial to provide clinicians with simplified tools that speak their language,” said Prith Banerjee, Chief Technology Officer at Ansys. “Integrating Optimeyes with Mechanical delivers a next-gen solution for ophthalmologists to effectively battle cataracts and low-cylinder astigmatism. This enables first-time-right surgeries, helping those who have vision impairment to regain a higher quality of life faster than ever.”
