Eye-tracking in retail

With the mission to bring sensing solutions to multiple industries, Martigny-based Eyeware has entered into a partnership with Orbbec, the global developer and supplier of 3D cameras and motion-sensing technology. The companies aim to enable 3D eye tracking in consumer cameras for industries like retail, simulators and academic research.

Founded as a spin-off of Idiap Research Institute and EPFL, Eyeware develops 3D eye-tracking software for depth sensing enabled consumer devices. The company collaborates with multiple industrial partners to prototype and develop innovative eye-tracking applications.

The startup has recently announced a new partnership with Orbbec, one of the leading 3D camera suppliers worldwide. By combining Orbbec’s line of advanced 3D cameras and Eyeware’s robust eye-tracking technology (video), the two companies aim to provide industries like retail, simulators and academic research with eye-tracking for consumer depth-sensing cameras.

For the retail industry, consumer-grade sensors and eye-tracking data will allow for simplified shopper insights. Orbbec's Astra Embedded S 3D camera together with Eyeware's technology will be applicable for use on the shelf or in kiosk setups that require compactness. The simulation industry can rely on the hardware to enable eye tracking for training simulators resulting in enhanced training sessions with eye-tracking data for visual checks, shorter training periods. The third application area is academic research where the technology will facilitate progress in human-machine interaction, clinical research or human behaviour research.

“Use cases that previously have not been economically viable are now unlocked using cost-effective, commercial depth sensors to track the human gaze in the open space. We partnered with Orbbec at CES 2020 to demonstrate 3D eye tracking with the Orbbec Astra Embedded S, and we are happy to continue our journey together to empower new industries with eye-tracking capabilities, enabling machines to see the world in 3D and allow more natural interactions”, shared Bastjan Prenaj, CBDO and co-founder at Eyeware.

Acknowledging the significance of the continued partnership, Prenaj adds: "Orbbec serves a wide range of markets that require innovation and commercial depth sensor solutions. Coupling their expertise with our eye-tracking capabilities takes us a step closer to our mission which is to enable machines to see the world in 3D and allow more natural interactions."

Behind Eyeware is a team of 20 employees based at its three locations. The company raised CHF1.9 in 2019 and is currently raising a Series A round scheduled to close at the end of this year.
