Biopôle new buildings

Edmond de Rothschild Real Estate SICAV will be investing in the construction of three new buildings on the Biopôle site in Lausanne. The construction permit has already been cleared and building work should begin in December 2022.

The three new buildings will host up to 500 people and have been designed to house both offices and laboratories for companies working in the life sciences. They will be located at the south end of the campus, by the Vennes metro stop and next to the Aquatis Aquarium.

The collaboration between Biopôle and Edmond de Rothschild Real Estate SICAV is nothing new: the investor already owns 15’120 m2 on this life sciences complex and made its first investment on site more than 10 years ago. The plan for the construction of an additional 23,000-m2 complex was announced in February 2021, and Biopôle has now signed with Edmond de Rothschild Real Estate SICAV to make the plan a reality.

Located at the heart of the Health Valley, Biopôle currently hosts around 2,400 people, with more than 130 companies and research institutes present on the site. The growth is based on the increase in the number of tenants but also by the growth of the companies on the site and the increasing use of the Biopole services. A good example for a strongly growing company is Distalmotion. When the team arrived in 2018 they had 380 m2 and approx. 20 people. Today, they have 120 employees and occupy 2,400 m2. Demand for Biopole's Startlab has also developed very positively. This year it will be enlarged from 1,000 to 1,500 m2 and a BSL2 lab will be added.

Nasri Nahas, CEO of Biopôle SA, says: ‘Biopôle offers modern, high-quality infrastructure and an agreeable workplace environment. But we go well beyond that by creating a dynamic ecosystem with community support and stimulating effective networking between entrepreneurs, which are invaluable for our members and enable them to thrive. We are delighted, through this new project and our renewed collaboration with Edmond de Rothschild, to be able to support the expansion of our members at Biopôle, as well as to welcome new companies to our site.’

Pierre Jacquot, Co-CEO of Edmond de Rothschild REIM, manager of Edmond de Rothschild Real Estate SICAV, says: ‘We are convinced that the development of the life sciences is vital, and we are reinforcing our commitment to this sector through our project at Biopôle. Its dynamic community has evolved massively in recent years and, with this project, we are proud to participate actively in its future development.’
