The submissions deadline for Startup Open, a featured competition at Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011 that recognizes startups with high-growth potential, is now only one week away. Startups can register at www.startupopen.com/register until Sept. 15.

Global Entrepreneurship Week is the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare.

During one week each November, GEW inspires people everywhere through local, national and global activities designed to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators. These activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings, connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors—introducing them to new possibilities and exciting opportunities.

One of the featured events of GEW is Startup Open: a global competition to identify and recognize startup companies founded between GEW 2010 and GEW 2011. It is open to any entrepreneurs who have just started, or are about to start, a new venture and have a “startup moment” between November 22, 2010, and November 20, 2011.

What is a startup moment? A startup moment can be when a business is incorporated; doors open for business; a first sale is completed; outside funding is secured; or something else that can be interpreted as the company is “open for business.”

By entering, startups will have the chance to be recognized as part of "the GEW 50" -- 50 of the most promising ventures from around the world. Of these, one winner will be selected to receive an all-expense-paid trip to Liverpool, UK, to attend the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in March 2012. A second winner will receive one year of mentoring from Redbox founding members and serial entrepreneurs Michael DeLazzer and Biju Kulathaka, courtesy of the Entrepreneurs' Organization.

Applicants will have from March 31 until September 15 to submit their startup. On October 15, the GEW 50 will be announced. Those companies will have until October 22 to review the judges’ comments and tweak their applications. The final round of judges will tally their scores and announce the winners during Global Entrepreneurship Week 2011.
