Switzerland boasts several startups that leverage today’s advanced technologies to tackle climate-related issues. Four of these companies have received awards from multiple competitions, recognising their innovative solutions for managing energy consumption, recycling fibreglass, and making sustainability reporting easy.

The Swiss chapter of the ClimateLaunchPad competition chose Youn Control AG to represent Switzerland in the global finale. The Zurich-based startup developed a predictive and intelligent heating control system that optimises district heating networks and reduces energy consumption in family homes. Currently, heating buildings alone account for 30% of the total energy consumption. Yuon Control optimises heat management across the entire system, thereby increasing the capacity by about 25%, reducing peak loads, and providing real-time data to unlock remote monitoring/management of the system. Their control system independently learns the thermal characteristics of a building and optimises its heating practices.

Wattanywhere Shell Pitching Competition
The Sion-based startup WattAnyWhere won the Shell Startup Pitching Competition at the Web Summit 2023 in Lisbon. The startup showcased its transformative Off-Grid Electricity solution tailored for BEV Fast-Charging, addressing the high demand for ulta-fast chargers for Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Europe. WattAnyWhere, in collaboration with EPFL, Helbio and Elcogen, presented an innovative Solid Oxide Fuel Cell-based mobile generator powered by ethanol. This solution, deployable within a month, will benefit the development of clean energy accessibility in urban environments (in the context of mobility).

Composite recycling | Sustainability Project of the Year
Composite Recycling, the startup that developed a unique process to recycle composite material into glass fibres and pyrolysis oil, has been awarded the Sustainability Project of the Year with its partner Beneteau Group, at the 2023 Boat Builder Awards. This category recognises collaborations that made changes to improve their business and production processes, resulting in objectively measurable reductions in environmental impact. Composite Recycling and the Beneteau Group are recycling fibres into new builds.

Pelt 8 | Swiss Insurtech Award, the enabling sustainability category
The 2023 Swiss Insurtech Award, organised by the Swiss InsurTech Hub, a nonprofit association with the mission, to promote the digitisation and innovation of the insurance sector, went to Pelt8. The Zurich-based startup founded in 2021 built a cloud platform to enable companies to collect sustainability-related data and generate automatically curated reports.
