A fresh crop of awards for Swiss startups

From Valais to Thessaloniki, Swiss start-ups are winning competitions and making a strong impression in areas such as water saving, improving the life quality of the population, keeping solar plants healthy, enabling the needed transformations in Europe’s food value chain to meet U.N.’s SDG and fostering sustainable packaging innovation.

Droople, Prix Alpiq 2021
At the 1st Edition of the Prix Alpiq, Droople was crowned “Winner of hearts” 2021 with the project WaSTeLeSS (Water savings and termination of Leakage through Smart Sensors network) initiated with the Commune of Val de Bagnes, in partnership with EPFL and ALTIS Groupe SA. The project aims to raise awareness of water use in Val de Bagnes and reduce drinking water consumption by up to 20%. The startup cashed a CHF 10’000 reward. The 1st edition of the Prix Alpiq brought together 18 sustainable water management projects sponsored by 21 Valais communes. The projects submitted address issues from many fields, such as agriculture, energy and tourism.

Mirrakoi, Fondation Dalle Molle Award
For its 11th edition, the Dalle Molle Foundation is rewarding "RHINO3DMEDICAL", a Swiss innovative project improving the quality of life of the population and developed by the MIRRAKOI. Its director, Pablo Garcia-Amorena, has created a 3D imaging software to facilitate the adoption of 3D printing in orthopaedic and cranial surgery planning.  Mirrakoi is a startup from the Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (LIB) at EPFL. It invented Augmented CAD, a powerful technology for computer-aided design (CAD). The startup offers software that simulates real physical contact during the 3D digital modelling process. It enables unprecedented efficiency, accuracy and acceleration of the interactive design process for CAD and CAE.

SmartHelio, Swiss Turkish Startup Challenge
SmartHelio is the winner of the Swiss Turkish Startup Challenge. The newly launched Swiss-Turkish startup program aims to connect the startup ecosystems and make Switzerland attractive to Turkish investors. Selected participants will have the opportunity to showcase their solutions during the Swiss days in Turkey, and a winner from each country will receive a cash prize along with in-kind offers. The startup cashed the CHF 7’500 First Prize.

AgroSustain, THRIVE Europe 2021 Challenge
Olga Dubey, Co-Founder and CEO of Swiss Plant Protection pioneer AgroSustain just won the Female Founder Award at the THRIVE Europe 2021 Challenge. Her startup was among the ten European companies presenting their ideas before an audience of top agricultural leaders, investors, and entrepreneurs. The THRIVE Europe Challenge, in partnership with ICL Planet Startup Hub, is part of THRIVE's Global Initiative which aims to enable the needed transformations in Europe’s food value chain as highlighted in the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal. The Challenge will accomplish this by identifying, promoting, accelerating, and investing in innovative early-stage European startups that are creating new and alternative paths for a more efficient and sustainable global food system.

Rheonics awarded by European Rotogravure Association
Winterthur based Rheonics just won a Sustainable Packaging Innovation Award by the European Rotogravure Association. The Swiss startup President Sunil Kumar received the award at the Annual & Packaging and Decorative Gravure Conference held in Thessaloniki, Greece on 21-23 September 2021. With a team of experts coming from leading universities and companies, Rheonics is rapidly providing application-specific fluid sensing solutions for a wide variety of measurement challenges in the most demanding and aggressive environments.
