xFarm at the E-nnovation event

xFarm developed a digital farm management platform to enable farmers to track their activities. With 1700 farms already registered, xFarm’s ambition is to expand to other EU countries. The solution also impressed the jury of the E-nnovation awards, making it one of the three winners of the award.

The E-nnovation week brought together brands, investors and start-ups discover and gain insights on some of the latest innovation trends in the e-commerce, digital and retail industries. Besides keynotes, speeches and workshops, the event dedicated one of the days startups to award and celebrate innovative ideas.

From the six  finalists, three startups received the E-nnovation award. One of the winners is xFarm from Lugano. The startup developed software to enable farmers to work, improve data management using a digital logbook that can be used to create essential documents to track activities and analyze their data. Farmers can use the tool to input activities such as sowing, fertilizing and harvesting. Each employee can then track and view activities independently of the others, combining the benefits of centralized management and work distribution. xFarm can also be used to create and manage all the reporting required for authorities and certification bodies.

In the center of xFarm’s solution is the xSense, an IoT device designed to monitor crops and protect them from adverse environmental conditions and the most common diseases. xSense is equipped with a camera and sensors for measuring environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity of air and soil, precipitation and radiation, which constantly synchronizes with xFarm's servers via GSM. xSense's images and measurements are integrated into the xFarm's graphical interface, allowing 360° control of everything that happens on the farm. xSense measurements are combined with activities tracked in xFarm to provide targeted alerts for critical crop situations, such as drought or pest development.

Recently, the startup’s team of eight employees released its BETA. The company now counts 1700 farms that are registered on the platform and has distributed the first batch comprising of 50 IoT devices into the market.

Besides its Lugano branch, xFarm plans to open its first operative branch in Milan, Italy to cover the local market. “Milan is the best candidate as close to us, and a good logistic point to cover the market,” said Matteo Vanotti, a correspondent from xFarm. “The next milestones include scaling farms, industrializing the IoT devices and introducing value-added services onto the platform.”
