The building industry accounts for about 40% of global energy use, CO2 emissions, and waste production. Innovative building solutions are vital to reduce its environmental impact. Structural floors contribute up to 60% of a building's material and environmental impact. With growing populations and living standards, an additional 190 billion sqm of floor space is needed within the next 25 years, including 400 million sqm annually in Europe. Our solution, developed over 10 years of research at ETH Zurich, dramatically reduces material usage in floors, with 70% less concrete and 80% less steel compared to conventional slabs. It is designed for manufacturing, assembly, and deconstruction (DfMA and DfD), offering a code-compliant, low-carbon, circular, and cost-effective solution.
