Two medtech start-ups and a cleantech company have been awarded with the CTI Start-up label yesterday: Climeworks, Medimaps and Medirio.

The three new carriers of the CTI Start-up label are developing fascinating technology for pressing problems.

Climeworks provides solutions for efficiently capturing CO2 out of ambient air. The company, based in Zurich, offers a competitive and environmentally friendly CO2 supply to its customers. Climeworks’ CO2 enables the production of carbon-neutral renewable fuels allowing for efficient storage of renewable energies. Recently Climeworks made the headlines with a partnership with the German car manufacturer Audi. Audi is participating in the development costs of Climeworks’ CO2 collector with a significant amount. In 2015 the first CO2 collector worldwide shall be integrated in a production plant for synthetic fuel.

Medimaps Group, established in 2006, has headquarters in Geneva and a R&D center in Bordeaux. Medimaps has developed market leading medical software that assesses bone texture. Its flagship product is TBS iNsight. Medimaps’ TBS is the only technology capable of assessing Trabecular Bone Score - a digital bone quality marker - from X-ray images used in routine clinical practice. Medimaps’ TBS is a texture analysis of bone X-ray images. It is embedded in software and is able, in seconds, to improve the osteoporosis diagnosis. It enables the doctor to identify patients with high fracture risk and also to select the appropriate treatment.

Medirio provides insulin pen users with a new drug delivery system which allows diabetic patients to manage their insulin injections in an easier, discreet and more comfortable way. The simple but reliable medical device offers functionalities and services pens cannot offer and that are typically associated with more expensive therapies such as pump-based treatments. Medirio’s system comprises two devices, a hand-held controller and a disposable patch device. While the disposable patch device rests on the patient’s body and under his or her clothes for about 3 days, the hand-held controller allows patients to select the required insulin doses and deliver the medicament by simply placing it onto the patch device.
