The Swiss Start-up Monitor is a community platform, which matches stakeholders within the Swiss entrepreneurship ecosystem and provides registered user with a variety of benefits. During the last two years the platform has evolved continuously. Several new elements are planned.

Dr. Peter Vogel  is an internationally renowned serial entrepreneur, entrepreneurship trainer and scholar. For the past years he has been extensively involved in a number of ecosystem projects and initiatives. Since earlier this year, Peter has joined the University of St. Gallen as Postdoctoral Researcher and Managing Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship. “We are glad to have Peter onboard the Swiss Start-up Monitor”, writes the Start-up Monitor team in a press release. Maria Fantetti and Barbara Burkhard, both research associates and PhD candidates at the Chair for Entrepreneurship of the University of St. Gallen, are responsible for the operational activities of the Swiss Start-up Monitor.

A community platform for the Swiss start-up scene
The Swiss Start-up Monitor consists of the Swiss Start-up directory and a protected area. The Swiss Start-up directory allows visitors to get an overview of the Swiss start-up landscape showing the geographical distribution of Swiss start-ups on a map. The protected area offers functionalities for the users such as start-up profiles, search and filter functionalities, and other helpful features.

Initiated in 2012, the Swiss Start-up Monitor is a joint research initiative of the University of St.Gallen, ETH Zurich and University of Basel supported by the Commission of Technology and Innovation (CTI), Gebert Rüf Stiftung and AVINA Stiftung.

The main goal is to build up an exclusive panel of Swiss start-ups in order to foster entrepreneurship on a micro- and on a macro-economic level. This aim will be achieved by collecting and analyzing data of Swiss start-ups on an aggregate and anonymous level, providing high data security and user controllability at any time. Today the Start-up Monitor has a sample size of 1680 start-ups in the public directory and 587 in the private area for registered user.

Two years of assessing the Swiss entrepreneurship ecosystem
Over the past two years the team has implemented several features such as an activity feed, job board, operations board, benchmarking tool etc., in order to create added value for start-ups. One of the largest development efforts has been the integration of stakeholders in the Swiss Start-up Monitor communication interface. Now, not only start-ups but also investors, industries, awards and agencies are granted to have access to the private community area. The Start-up Monitor team is currently working on intensifying the data collection, improving the platform functionalities, and setting up research cooperations. A key objective for the Swiss Start-up Monitor is to lead the project to an international level. This geographical expansion will provide a more detailed and profound picture of the entrepreneurial scene.
