Thanks to swissnex India, CTI Start-up, Vaud SPECo, IBM and Stripe – a first-of-its-kind global social crowdfunding platform Fairfundr has been launched, where creators keep 100% of the funds raised from around the world in 139 local currencies.

Fairfundr was set up with the objective to provide creators such as artisanal product makers, social entrepreneurs, musicians, organisations as well as startups with an agenda for social good, a platform to spread awareness & raise funds in local currencies for their projects in over a 100 countries.

“Our vision is to make great things happen for people every day and enable them in advancing the arts, entrepreneurship and philanthropy in creative ways. We are inspired by Ms. Jeyalakshmi Venkatanarayanan, who is leading the UNIVERSE ART FOUNDATION to support artists with medical and educational grants, by Mr. Jürgen Vogel, who is crusading for the rights of Amazonian Indians, by amazing artists from Bangalore like Mr. Aman Mahajan who is taking his blend of Jazz, Classical and Folk to the world.”, says Jeannine Srivastava, co-founder, Fairfundr.

The crowdfunding platform has already garnered support worldwide and currently hosts 11 campaigns with target amounts ranging from 768 USD to 408,000 USD. Social activist and Director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, Dr. Mallika Sarabhai has tied up with Fairfundr for a new initiative titled ‘Sensitising Through the Arts for Gender Equality’ (STAGE). The campaign seeks to raise 167,000 USD on the crowdfunding platform with funding ending on January 10, 2015. “Darpana, during the last four decades, has used the artistic platform for social change, and through its performances, has been able to bring to light inherent cultural biases that exist against women. With STAGE, we will reach out to thousands of young college students in Ahmedabad, India to create a just society,” says Dr. Sarabhai.

Fairfundr has also attracted solo entrepreneurs from the independent arts such as musician Sahil Makhija, who is the frontman of India’s largest metal band, Demonic Resurrection. Makhija’s previous campaign, a cooking show titled Headbanger’s Kitchen, raised approximately 1,000 USD more than its original target of 3,800 USD. Now seeking to fund a solo album, Makhija is confident of raising 4,500 USD over a 3-month-long campaign on Fairfundr. “I’ve been involved in the music industry for 15 years now, and this is me connecting with my fans directly, without any labels or middlemen. The fans are making the album happen,” he says.

Finally, filmmaker Aditi Thakor’s feature film about a folk puppeteer from modern Gujarat requires a whopping 408,000 USD to get off the drawing board. Aditi Thakor did her Post Graduation in Film Studies from Pune and received the Best Student Award, a Certificate for Art Direction from MICA (Mudra Institute of Communication, Ahmedabad) and a Diploma for Communication Design from Camberwell College of Art, London Institute, UK. Since 2009, she has been writing scripts & lyrics, directing and composing. She believes in creating Films that make a difference. “Fairfundr believed in my dream and is supporting me to develop and promote my campaign, and connecting me with other likeminded people from across the world. I am sure I will achieve my goal,” she says.

A truly global platform
Among the many things that differentiate Fairfundr from its international crowdfunding peers is its global campaign management, support for local currencies, no-setup-fee and no-threshold policy. That is, creators don’t need to pay an initial amount to create their campaigns on the platform, and get to keep whatever they raise, even if their campaign doesn’t achieve its target. “Creators inspire us everyday and now everyday we support them succeed even more”, adds Rajiv Srivastava, cofounder, Fairfundr.
