One day before the annual international science conference Falling Walls, 100 junior scientists, entrepreneurs and innovators from 38 nations presented their research projects, ideas and initiatives in Berlin. Thomas Rippel, founder of Organic Standard, was selected as winner.

The Falling Walls Lab is a new challenging, inspiring and interdisciplinary format for young bright minds. It offers the opportunity to excellent young academics and professionals to present their outstanding ideas, research projects and initiatives in 3 minutes. A prestigious jury awards the best participants.

This year the jury declared the Swiss farmer and scientist Thomas Rippel of „Organic Standard“ the winner of the Falling Walls Lab Finale 2012 in Berlin. Rippel was also voted winner of the Audience Award. In his talk, he explained how cow dung (manure) – which is a rich natural fertilizer, but also produces large amounts of toxic gases – can be neutralized in an eco-friendly and highly efficient way. By adding Sauerkraut juice, a by-product of food production, Rippel’s method stops the fouling processes in manure, thus stabilizing the nutrient matters and enriching the mould. The jury was particularly impressed by Rippel’s extraordinary approach, connecting scientific theory and farming practice, as well as his passionate and authentic presentation.

Thomas Rippel won EUR 1000 and an iPad. Even more important: He can now present his ideas at the Falling Walls Conference which took place on Friday.

Rippels company Organic Standard supports ecologically sustainable farming by allowing individuals and businesses to offset their CO2 emissions through regional projects.
