Early-stage Niatsu is on a mission to help companies in the food and beverage industry automate their product carbon footprint calculation. The startup has now launched its platform with its first customer, Outlawz Food, the provider of meat alternative products.

The Food and Beverages (F&B) industry is one of the leading contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 36% of the overall emissions worldwide. With climate change posing a significant threat to the industry itself, affecting its supply chain and productivity, players in this industry must act quickly. One approach is understanding where they produce the most emissions to support better decision-making and meet consumer demand for sustainable products. Existing solutions to calculate emissions are mainly tailored to large industries.

Marius Semm and Jakob Tresch co-founded Niatsu to support small and mid-sized companies by providing a cost-effective and transparent carbon footprint accounting software that automates data collection and aggregation. The software assesses carbon emissions from product ingredients, including emissions created from manufacturing and transport to the point of sale. Changes in recipes and seasonality can be quickly adapted. The company’s unique proposition lies in its hands-on approach to automated carbon calculations and integration into customers’ existing systems.

The output from the Niatsu assessment is information on a dashboard to help companies optimise their supply chains and identify climate risk. Niatsu promises up to 80% faster workflow, and thanks to machine learning, customers can quickly match their data with the best sources to redefine product modelling.

Following the positive start and test phase in 2023, Niatsu is officially launched, with its first paying customer, outlawz, a Bern-based company specialising in alternative meat products. As part of this project, Niatsu will analyse the CO2 emissions associated with Outlawz’s primary product range to help increase transparency regarding the environmental impact of meat alternatives for consumers. By examining the ecological footprint of these products, Niatsu aims to provide valuable insights that can help consumers make more informed choices. “This effort represents a step towards understanding and mitigating the environmental effects of food production,” says Semm.

With this milestone, the Niatsu team of four employees look ahead to a busy year as they aim to enhance their software and acquire more customers. The bootstrapped startup has previously benefited from the support of the Bluelion and Circular Economy Incubator.
