Winners of the 3pi competition at ETH Zurich

Three early-stage startups in the cleantech and travel sectors have won first place in their respective competitions. The journey continues for two startups that won a ticket to participate in the global finals of the ClimateLaunchpad and Phocuswright/WiT Global Startup Pitch in Singapore.

The 3Pi competition, organised by ETH Pioneer Fellowship and ETH Entrepreneurship, offers Pioneer Fellows the opportunity to present their projects to the audience of ETH spin-offs, fellow students, and other key players in the startup scene. The first-place winner of the 2023 edition is Julia Carpenter, founder of Apheros. The 2023-founded EH Spinoff is developing novel metal foams, including iron, stainless steel, copper, and nickel, that offer unprecedented properties due to their extremely high surface area and low density. The startup's innovative processes are highly adaptable, easily scaled, and provide customisable porosity, pore sizes, and mechanical properties. Applications range from cooling to lubrication, catalysis, and energy storage. The start-up is already collaboration with several large industrial partners.

The second prize and the audience prize went to Seoho Jung from Chiral Nano AG, a startup providing a fully automated high-speed manufacturing solution for nanomaterial-based transistors with high speed and unreached yield to enable industrial-scale manufacturing. The 3rd prize went Nevena Paunović with Transire Bio, the provider of a painless alternative for the delivery of medicine. Their technology relies on an octopus-inspired suction patch that patients place on the inner side of the cheek, enabling the drug to reach the bloodstream efficiently. All three won a ticket for the Swiss Innovation Forum in Basel.

ClimateLaunchpad Swiss winners revealed
Seven startups showcased their green business projects at the Swiss Final of the ClimateLaunchpad competition, from which the national jury selected the best three startups. The first place went to 1st place goes to Levron Dynamics – with its passive magnetic bearing flywheel. The startup aims to develop a safe and viable flywheel energy storage for maintaining control reserves to stabilize the power grid in the ongoing energy transition. This is made possible by our novel passive magnetic bearing technology with further applications in high-performing pumps and centrifuges. The 2nd place was claimed by Kuafu, creators of an AI service software catering to the building and e-mobility sector and the 3rd place by Yuon Control AG Control, with its predictive heating control system for district heating networks. The three winners will represent Switzerland in the virtual European Finals and the  Global Grand Finale. Last year, 2D Membranes from Switzerland won the Global finale.

Zytlyn represents Europe in Singapore
Geneva-based startup Zytlyn Technologies is one of the five startups selected to participate in the Grand Finals of the 2023 Phocuswright/WiT Global Startup Pitch during the WiT Singapore on October 2-4 to secure the title Global Startup of the Year. The winners will also participate in the Phocuswright Conference 2023. Representing the European region, Zytlyn will showcase its proprietary AI Predictive Travel Demand platform for travel and hospitality companies. The traveltech startup uses big data and machine learning to give companies predictive insights on travel demand to support commercial planning and operations.
