UrbanFarmers develops second product

UrbanFarmers is a spin-off company from the University of Applied Science in Wädenswil. Their urban farms are based on the tried and true application of Aquaponics: through the symbiosis of aquaculture and plants, the natural nutrients in the water are connected to a closed-loop water system, growing organic, healthy, and fresh fish and vegetables.

The first product of the company called Box is the “Schrebergarten 2.0”, a 21st Century incarnation of the “Schrebergarten”, or garden allotment. Inspired by the container-based concepts of a French Designer, the team has developed the UrbanFarmers Box as a DO-IT-YOURSELF system for growing fresh fish and vegetables in the city.

The start-up is now working on a prototype of a cheaper product called Globe. Globe is a unique geodesic rooftop farm design structure which is built using natural, renewable materials such as bamboo for its central structural elements. Inside the structure, UrbanFarmers AG proprietary Aquaponic system technology will be used, growing both fish and plants in natural synergy with each other. One Globe could feed a family of 4 with fresh fish and vegetables, salads & herbs - year-round. The Globe is smaller than the Box and will be significantly cheaper.

The Globe has received awesome reviews by some of the most influential design and sustainability blogs worldwide. For example: Abitare, Inhabitat, Designboom and Gizmag.

In a small crowd financing round the company collected more than USD7000 to improve the prototype. Now first pilot customers are needed. At the moment the team addresses hotels and restaurants.
