NESCAFÉ launched an information tool displaying the environmental impacts of a cup of coffee on climate change, water and biodiversity. The Swiss start-up Quantis provided the necessary data and designed the tool.

NESCAFÉ has chosen to evaluate the environmental impact of their products using a defined scientific approach called Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The company evaluated the impacts of a cup of coffee while taking into account each life cycle stage, from coffee farmin to consumer use including packaging end-of-life.

The environmental impact of a cup of NESCAFÉ coffee has been evaluated by Quantis, an independent company that specialises in environmental impact assessment. This study respects the ISO 14040 / 14044 standards, assuring an objective evaluation of the environmental performance NESCAFÉ products. The evaluation and the methodology are presented on a special website.

Founded in 2006 as Ecointesys, Quantis started out as a venture by EPFL researchers seeking to help businesses reduce their environmental impacts. The idea was so engaging that the young start-up, which initially employed only two people, has made significant headway in the past five years. In fact, in 2008, the company extended its activities to the United States. In 2009, it adopted a multinational structure and the new name Quantis and opened offices in France and Canada, integrating a spin-off of the CIRAIG in Montréal, one of the world's leading life cycle research centres.

Since then, Quantis has continued to evolve, growing from 40 collaborators in 2009 to over 70 today. The firm's client portfolio includes several regional businesses (such as BCV, Bobst, Eden Springs and Switcher) and large organizations in various activity sectors, including Nestlé and several of its subsidiaries, Firmenich, Kraft, Veolia and L'Oréal. The firm's turnover, which has steadily risen since the company was founded, reached almost 6 million CHF in 2011.
