Optotunes technology for tunable lens can be used for totally different products. The company demonstrates first products at Photonics West, the world’s leading photonics and laser tradeshow. One of the products is finalist of the Prism Award. The winners of the award will be revealed at the tradeshow.

Optotune has identified six sectors that appear to have considerable promise for the start-up from Dübendorf. One application field consists of pico projectors, small video projectors using lasers. Optotune has developed a system with a tunable lens that makes the pictures of those projectors clearer. The “speckle reducer” removes local interferences by dynamically diffusing the coherent beam. The speckle reducer is one of the first commercially available products based on electroactive polymers.

The Optotune team will demonstrate the speckle reducer at Photonics West, the world’s leading photonics and laser tradeshow along with other products such as a fast focus camera using the Optotune technology.

The speckle reducer is also nominated for the Prism Award, the annual international competition for companies working on photonics technologies and applications. Each of the nine awards, in categories ranging from life science and biophotonics to defense and security, feature a short-list of three nominees, with the winners to be revealed at a gala dinner during SPIE’s Photonics West event in San Francisco on January 25.

Optotune was founded in 2008 and has already won several award. In 2011 the company ranked first in the Swiss Start-up Top 100.
