Nuniq is battling the waste problem in the beauty industry by providing reusable, recyclable and biodegradable packaging for its natural hair care products. The startup is now shipping across Switzerland.

Over 142 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the global cosmetics industry, of which only 5% percent is effectively recycled. In Switzerland alone, over 205 million single-use plastic hair and shower bottles land in the trash every year. While recycling will not solve the plastic problem, reusing will. And that is where Commugny (Vaud) based startup nuniq comes in.

Incorporated in 2021 by co-founders Carmen Escaño Serrano and Silvia Marquez Calvet, Nuniq wants to solve this beauty industry’s waste challenge with its reusable packaging and biodegradable refills. The content in the packaging – shampoo, conditioner and boosters – is based on a unique vegan formula that uses active and highly efficient superfood ingredients suitable for all hair types. They contain no microbeads, Sodium Lauryl Sulphates SLS, parabens, silicones, or other damaging components found in the majority of existing products.

Following the success of its pre-launch in June, which saw some more than 100 product sales nuniq is now fully operational with an online shop. While the company is currently shipping through its online shop to customers in Switzerland, plans to go international are under discussion.

Nuniq is bootstrapped and has gained early traction by winning prizes from startup competitions such as the first-place winner for Retail & Consumer Services 2020,  >>venture >> and third place in IDDEA Prix 2020. Further steps to grow the company include further developing its formula and product range, expanding its reach through the DACH region, and establishing its distribution channels.
