Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading liner shipping companies, relies on Nexxiot’s tracking solutions. With 1 million dry container monitoring devices already installed, the company has launched the tracking solution “Live Position”, making it a frontrunner in using IoT technology on a large scale.

Nexxiot, a Zurich-based company, with a presence in Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and North America, provides supply chain players such as carriers, railcar operators, and cargo owners with a trusted Asset Intelligence technology, allowing them to monitor assets in real-time from anywhere in the world. Clients benefit from improved operational efficiency, meeting sustainability targets, and enhanced service quality.

Among its clients is Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading liner shipping companies boasting 266 modern container ships and a total transport capacity of 2.0 million TEU. In the Liner Shipping segment, the Company has around 13,500 employees and 403 offices in 140 countries. Hapag-Lloyd has a container capacity of 2.9 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) – including one of the largest and most modern fleets of reefer containers. A total of 113 liner services worldwide ensure fast and reliable connections between more than 600 ports on all the continents. In the Terminal & Infrastructure segment, Hapag-Lloyd has equity stakes in 20 terminals in Europe, Latin America, the United States, India and North Africa and around 2,900 employees.

Hapag-Lloyd and Nexxiot launched a joint project in 2022 to equip an entire dry container fleet with monitoring devices. In less than 1.5 years, more than one million devices were installed, an achievement that propelled the companies to expand their partnership for a mass rollout of the Live Position, a pioneering dry container monitoring solution equipped with Asset Intelligence, for customers.

Mass rollout of Live Position underway
“Live Position”, Hapag-Lloyd’s first dry container tracking product offers customers full transparency on the location of their shipments – from the start of transportation until the arrival at the destination. It features a user-friendly interface and easy-to-use search functionality by container, booking number, or in batches. The tool provides customers with a quick overview of their shipment’s current location, allowing them to make any necessary adjustments in real-time.

By being the first container shipping line to introduce a fleet-wide dry container tracking product, Hapag-Lloyd is demonstrating its commitment to deploying pioneering IoT (Internet of Things) technology in logistics on a large scale. More than two-thirds of the dry container fleets have already been equipped with tracking devices. Installations continue globally to catch the last boxes during the summer.

The Live Position product is poised to close the blind spots of global logistics “enabling real-time decision-making and risk mitigation while allowing a more efficient steering of our fleet of boxes”, says Hapag-Lloyd COO Dr. Maximilian Rothkopf. Henrik Schilling, Head of Global Commercial Development, adds: “The participants of our successful pilot phase have already acknowledged that we are going the extra mile to eliminate one of their greatest concerns. Now we would like to take all our customers on this journey to further develop this product. We are currently working on feeding the tracking data into the customers’ operational systems via API. Another milestone for advancing the product will be the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Prediction.”

Nexxiot CEO Stefan Kalmund expects dry container tracking will soon become a must-have for shipping lines. He said: “The interesting new capability is in monitoring and tracking the container from door to door. Historically, you never knew if your cargo was sitting on the back of a truck, or met or missed the ship. Now, you will know exactly when it is moved – it sends you a ping.”
