The very first round of the DayOne Accelerator – focusing on child and youth health – will start this January in Basel. The participants hailing from Switzerland, Canada and South Korea will receive six months of mentorship and 70,000 Swiss francs in non-dilutive funding.

DayOne is an initiative operated by BaselArea.swiss, seeking to further innovation in precision medicine and digital health. The first round of the DayOne Accelerator program, which is supported by Fondation Botnar, focuses on the health challenges and unmet needs of young people and children. Now, BaselArea.swiss has announced the three participating startups:

Advancience: The startup from Basel uses data gathered while playing computer games to diagnose psychiatric disorders.

Aurteen: Based in Alberta, Canada this startup develops software, which improves the detection, monitoring and treatment of retinopathy with preterm infants.

Noul: The South Korean startup has developed a portable device, which uses image analysis combined with artificial intelligence to diagnose diseases from blood samples.

The acceleration program starts in January and will take place in the collaborative workspace at the DayOne Lab in Basel. During the six months of the program Advancience, Aurteen and Noul – who prevailed against 58 international competitors – will participate in a mentorship and workshop program, gain access to local experts and exposure to the local healthcare innovation ecosystem.

The startups will also each receive 70,000 Swiss Francs in non-dilutive funding after establishing operation in the region of Basel (including cantons Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt and Jura). «We want to showcase the attractiveness of the Basel area, while strengthening the whole Swiss ecosystem», explains Fabian Streiff, Head of Innovation in Healthcare at BaselArea.Swiss. In the best case the international startups would decide to stay at the end of the program, adds Streiff.
