InSphero is the best Swiss start-up. The biotech company from Schlieren ranks first in the list with the Top 100 Swiss start-ups followed by L.E.S.S. and Abionic. The results of this year’s ranking were announced yesterday at a ceremony in Zurich.

Which are the best emerging companies, the ones Switzerland is pinning its hopes on to spread Swiss innovation throughout the world? To answer this question startup.ch launches each year the TOP 100 STARTUP AWARD in cooperation with the Handelszeitung and Journalistenbüro Niedermann. From over 100,000 young companies, the 100 most innovative and promising Swiss start-ups are picked by 100 top start-up experts. Yesterday the ranking was published for the fourth time.

InSphero ranks first this year. InSphero is a leading supplier of organotypic, biological in vitro 3D microtissues for highly predictive drug testing. The 3D microtissues are more predictive, last longer and are more affordable than conventional cell-based models. The company currently counts all of the top ten global pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies as customers and is helping them to implement its patented microtissue technology in their development work-flow.

A spin-off company of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich and the University Zurich, InSphero was founded in 2009 by Jan Lichtenberg, Jens M. Kelm and Wolfgang Moritz. It is headquartered in Schlieren, close to Zurich, Switzerland with subsidiaries in USA and Germany. The company is in the process of starting a first spin-off. Insphero wants to leverage its technology for the personalized medicine market with a “Personalized Tumor Kit” that will help oncologist to select the most effective drug therapy for the individual patient.

Runner-up: L.E.S.S.
L.E.S.S. provides a serious alternative to today's LEDs by providing their customers with ultrathin, -bright, and -uniform lighting systems. These key assets, offered by their unique fiber technology, allowed L.E.S.S. to successfully enter the industrial vision and display backlighting markets.
