Swiss startups deliver technology for a range of applications. Recent announcements saw two startups join the ‘Net Zero Space’ and United Nations initiatives to foster sustainability in space and textile. The partnerships between Swiss Blue Salmon and a Danish company, and Swissto12 and US-based CAES have similar sustainability goals.

Astrocast, the most advanced global nanosatellite IoT network, joined the ‘Net Zero Space’ initiative, set up by the Paris Peace Forum. Committed to the long-term sustainability of outer space, Astrocast joins satellite operators, launchers, space agencies and academics in the initiative, with a collective aim of achieving sustainable use of outer space for the benefit of all humankind by 2030. The news forms part of Astrocast’s long-term commitment and pledge to sustainability. The company already qualifies its satellites to withstand launch and space conditions before thrusting them into space. This prevents parts of the satellites from detaching, which risks damaging the rocket and other satellites and contaminating the cosmos with fragments.

Swiss Blue Salmon wins Danish partner
Founded in 2020, Swiss Blue Salmon is an integrated seafood company focusing on the sustainable production of premium quality farmed salmon. Its land-based farm uses innovative Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) technology to rear fish in alpine water free from antibiotics, pesticides, hormones and micro-plastics. The startup and Danish company DANTECH are entering into a strategic partnership focused on designing a solution to capture and upcycle valuable resources that usually would go lost at many other processors. DANTECH will work with the Swiss Blue Salmon choosing processing equipment designers and suppliers, transforming capturing and sidestream processing into an integrated part of the factory design installation. DANTECH delivers the sidestream processing areas as a complete turnkey solution. The company expects to have more than 1’000mt side streams annually from the in-house processing plant.

Haelixa traceability solutions in Peru’s Cotton value chain
A new pilot project under a United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) initiative aims to give sustainable rural cotton producers in Peru more visibility in the value chain. Swiss product traceability specialist Haelixa will work with Costach, the leading cooperative of cotton farmers in Peru, and Peruvian textile company Creditex. Haelixa’s DNA marker connects the actual lint cotton to the entry on a blockchain system provided by UNECE. The technology ensures the product’s origin information and journey along the value chain are always safely embedded into the product itself. The marked cotton will be used to make exclusive pyjamas sets for Cat´s Pajamas. DNA traceability will enable the verification of the premium origin of Peruvian Pima cotton in the final garment produced using sustainable practices by family farmers associated with the Costach cooperative.
