The SupplyChainTech Initiative founded in 2021 by Bern University of Applied Sciences has launched the first map showing the diverse players in the ecosystem. More than 130 startups have been mapped across 15 segments.

The Supply chain sector is the backbone of many companies, and it has become a pivotal part of businesses since the outbreak of the pandemic. Due to bottlenecks in the availability of goods, the increasing volume of online trade, or in the context of the current vaccine supply, the sector has taken the center stage. Furthermore, the increasing awareness of sustainability has pushed organisations to design solutions value chains that play a central role in meeting economic, ecological and social challenges.

To identify the players in Switzerland and the technologies provided, the University of Applied Sciences Bern has established the Swiss SupplyChainTech (SSCT) initiative. SSCT is a non-profit company network and expert community for start-ups and growing champions in the fields of supply chain management. The initiative aims to show the existing innovative technology-based solutions for the fields of logistics and SCM, to advance technologies and solutions for supply chains by increasing members’ visibility, promoting collaboration amongst members for further developments and providing customers and investors with access to and an overview of the SCM ecosystem.

As a starting point, the SSCT has structured and visualized the SupplyChainTech environment in Switzerland, pinpointing the different startups and their technologies across the supply chain spectrum. The first SupplyChainTech map highlights more than 130 startups demarcated in 15 segments.

A considerable number of start-ups are providing solutions for the distribution of physical products with a wide variety of innovations across the categories Packaging/Bins/Containers (7 startups), Robotics & Intra Logistics (10), Shipping Management & Transport Platform (7), Sourcing, Procurement & Materials Management (11) and Sustainability (5). For start-ups concerning unmanned aerial vehicles, the category "Drone Technology" was introduced featuring nine startups. Other represented fields are Additive Manufacturing (6),  Blockchain (9), City Logistics, Last Mile & Transportation (13), Compliance, Contract & Content Management (8), Data Analytics & Information Systems (9), Food Supply Chain (6), IoT Solutions & Devices (6), Mobility Solutions & Fleet Management (10), and Monitoring & Transparency (13).

More activities planned
Besides the map, the initiative has set up the SupplyChainTech Lab where startups and SMEs can integrate their solutions in a research environment and evolve tomorrow’s supply chain towards full connectivity, interoperability and visibility. The Pitches and Gipfeli session provides startups with the chance to present their solutions and get feedback, and the mentoring as advisory services have been put in place to connect start-ups with the right personalities from academia and/or senior management.
